Dropping into the body and discovering its natural ability to move with a beat is a liberating experience for us. The idea of letting your body move to a rhythm without commentary is an awakening experience that can awaken your slumbering libido from a very deep sleep.
When I trained in yoga dance, I was initially shy about the other students watching me move to the music. Recalling the mental commentary is quite curious and shocking. Curious because I’m certain it’s that same shared experience we each have - why don’t we turn that fantastic beat on the radio and let our bodies just move with it? It is shocking because what we are saying in this thinking brain is it is just plain silly to turn music on and dance for absolutely no reason at all just because it feels pleasant and joyful to do.
When we choose to stop the lousy roommates in our mind from telling us we shouldn’t be dancing and enjoy the moment, we free ourselves to have pleasure in our bodies. No more commentary, no more self-loathing, no more stagnate energy or tension in our bodies; instead we experience something that improves our well-being. Each time you begin to make the choice to free yourself to dance movements you are choosing to explore your own pleasure, free from commentary.
Today, find a beat that makes you feel sexy, sensual, and energized. Turn up the volume and let your body step into the rhythm of freedom. Remember, when you let go of the busy mind that has lots to say and just be with movement, you are experiencing the moment and that moment is mindful. In the words of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, “Mindful Movements are a way to touch the sky, to smile at your own body, and to touch your heart.”
