The body has about 30 trillion cells. There are approximately 200 different types of cells such as red blood cells (RBC’s), white blood cells (WBC’s), immune cells, bacterial cells, etc...you get the idea. But an organelle within all these various cells, called the mitochondria, maintains some very special function such as energy production through converting food to energy, cell respiration, nerve conduction, and cell death, known as apoptosis. When this powerhouse functions optimally, all the cells in your body can do the work that they are intended to do. However, one of the most common complaints in Sherri’s office are related to fatigue; having no energy, feeling no motivation, a generalized “blah”. When Sherri hears these kinds of complaints, she knows that’s it time to address the powerhouse: the mitochondria. Maintaining excellent mitochondrial health is a fundamental part of all Integrative-Functional Medicine plans.

When you think about your immune system, functions like defending the body against viruses and bacteria might be what comes to mind.
